wish I would've known!

So since this is my last year here at Sul Ross, I've been thinking a lot about things that I wish I would've known when I first got here that I know now. It's sometimes hard to look back and remember all the struggles but at the same time it's funny to think, "WHHHYYY did I do that?!" Lol... now that I've been here for almost 4 years, things seem simpler and the classes seem to get easier (knock on wood). But I know it's not the classes or the school or even the teachers that have changed, it's me! And although I am definitely not the most mature person around, I have seen the small ways that I've learned from my past, grown up, and realized a bunch of things... Some of them might seem like common sense, but you'd be surprized at how much this list would've helped me!!

"I wish I knew then what I know now!!"

  • BE CAREFUL WHO YOU ROOM WITH!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!
  • 8 o'clock classes are NOT that bad... just wake up!!
  • DO YOUR HOMEWORK WHEN IT IS ASSIGNED AND REMEMBER TO TURN IT IN!
  • You don't have to eat out every single day! (It's a waste of money!!)
  • That money you save from NOT eating out everyday could come in handy when, ummm... RENT IS DUE!!
  • Check in with financial aid even when all your paper work has gone through... ALWAYS double check everything!
  • Check your email every day.
  • Check your mailbox OFTEN.
  • When your car is on E, PUT GAS IN IT!!
  • Watch for overdrafts in your bank account!!

Reading this list back to myself makes me want to laugh because you can just imagine the dumb mistakes I've made that could've been avoided! Lol... and I'm sure I missed plenty more which is the sad part. So if you want to comment on my list or add a few pointers of your own, go ahead. This seems rediculous but I think everyone goes through a phase!

  2. Great topic Naomi! There will be many more lessons you will learn in the game of life. That's what life's about, learning from your mistakes. I myself wish I could click the undo button for some things I did wrong, but I had to learn the hard way. Good Luck in the future.

  3. lol thanks for the good luck guys... and yeah sometimes I wish I had an "undo" button too!! Even though we learn from all of our experiences, some of them are just NOT fun to remember. My friends decided to contribute to my list...

-Just because you turn 21, does NOT mean your tolerance suddenly sky-rocketed!

-Be careful who you trust and who you call your "friends".

-Yes, we are in college, but not everyone will act like an adult. Some of the people you would expect more out of will disappoint you and/or get on your nerves. Don't overreact. They're hardly ever worth it.

-Lol... One friend learned how to get into his car when he locks his keys in it. But I suppose I shouldn't share the details. Let's hope he never does that again.

-You should actually go study copies of old tests in the library if a teacher offers them. Don't make things harder on yourself! They DO help!

lol... I think this list could go on forever!

  4. That is a great post! I am a few years removed from the Alpine/ Sul Ross scene but this is right on! I'm sure we can all relate to everything you posted and add a few more along the way. Life is full of these "I wish I woulda..." situations, its how we learn and respond when we do make a mistake that makes us the people we are.

  5. This is an excellent topic! Good Job! I agree with your list except maybe the second one (8 o'clock classes are not that bad" I know of two people who took an 8 o'clock class and they said they would never do it again lol but then again maybe I should not disagree because I've never taken one soooo yeah but anyway to add on to your list I will say "buy/rent your textbooks online (if possible.)" I look forward to more posts on your blog! =)

  6. I enjoyed reading your comments. I guess the one that hits us is not to eat out every day. So far this Midwinter session, that's what's happened to us...three meals a day on the town since January 3, except for the one meal we took the doggie bag home and ate it the next day! Ouch! AND that does get expensive. We have been so busy.

8:00 class???!!! I remember a couple of classes at 7:30 a.m. at Oklahoma State, back in the day. And, uh, some jobs require you to be at work at 8:00...really!

  8. Daughter, Cindy, is a team leader at the HEB Meat Processing Plant in San Antonio. It's a 60-mile commute round trip. She LEAVES her house at 4 a.m. every day to be at the plant and on the floor by 5. So, when you shop at HEB and see those pork chops on the styrofoam trays, her team probably put them there!

  9. I really like your blog, specially because I have done most of the things that you put on the list such as the classes at 8 am, turning homework when it is due and the overdrafts on the bank account, that's why I do not have one anymore. But like you said we all learn from our mistakes sooner or later.. good luck in this year it is my last year too..
